Home Depot is a chain of home improvement stores with locations throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company sells a variety of building supplies, such as lumber, paint, tools, and appliances. It also provides a variety of services, such as in-home delivery and installation, and garden centers. In addition, the store sells a wide range of commercial and industrial products.
The company was founded in 1978 by Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, Pat Farrah, and Ken Langone. Its initial business proposition was to build home-improvement superstores, larger than any of its competitors’ facilities, to serve the needs of professional home builders and contractors and to appeal to a broad swath of the consumer market.
In the early 1990s, Home Depot sought to redefine its marketplace by establishing itself as a national brand and offering its customers a one-stop shop for all their home improvement needs. It expanded its store base with the acquisition of a number of other hardware chains, including Aikenhead’s Hardware and Bradlee’s Hardware in 1995.
At the same time, it began a major advertising campaign to promote its services and brand. It became a sponsor of PBS’ This Old House and Trading Spaces, and later partnered with ESPN on College GameDay.
The Home Depot is a member of the US Green Business Network and has participated in several green initiatives. As a major buyer of construction materials, the company has led efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, support sustainable forestry practices, and help communities get clean water. In 2007, Home Depot introduced a green product label for nearly 3,000 products and has worked with environmental organizations to create a variety of other programs.
