Malibu Wines & Beer Garden in West Hills – California

The San Fernando Valley isn’t known as much of a wine destination like Napa or the Central Coast, but Malibu Wines & Beer Garden in West Hills hopes to change that. This sister-concept to the Semler family’s laidback tasting room in Malibu proper opened this September on a sprawling estate that was once the 1930’s silent film actor Francis Lederer’s home. The property now serves up wines from the family’s Saddlerock Ranch label, craft beer and pizza on weekends.

The setting is enchanting. Twinkling lights dangle vertically from the trees and a beehive-shaped fountain is illuminated at sunset; a 1947 Chevy Fleet Master similar to one Lederer owned, as well as a stainless steel “WINE” structure that mirrors Robert Indiana’s famous LOVE sculpture, also serve as scene-setting elements.

Guests can enjoy the wines by the glass or as flights; I tried five reds from the Saddlerock line, including 2015 Pinot Noir (tart acidity), 2014 Sangiovese (warm spice notes), 2016 Merlot (stone fruit intensity), and a Zinfandel with a tangy finish. There are also a few local brews on tap, including offerings from 14 Cannons, Modern Times, Cellador Ales, and Five Threads Brewing Company. Pizza is served on Friday nights and all day Saturday and Sunday from Two Doughs, with live music on the weekend.

While the Valley location will accommodate smaller private soirees, Ron Semler says he views it as more of a public venue. He plans to keep this location open until the sun goes down, with the exception of a few private events each month, and wants to see this spot become a destination for people to hang out on the lawn under the stars.

Bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the live music, food and wine in this gorgeous outdoor setting. A variety of food trucks are parked on site during the weekends as well. During my visit, the Shrimp & Taco Stop and Italian Ice Shoppe both had a presence; the former offering three different flavors of alcoholic, fruity Italian ices made with Malibu Family Wines.
