In-N-Out Burger in Canoga Park Faces Backlash Over Drive-Through Delays

The In-N-Out Burger located in Canoga Park is renowned for its delectable double-double animal style burgers, fries, and shakes. As one of California’s most beloved burger restaurants, it boasts multiple locations throughout the Los Angeles area. Established as a privately owned chain in 1948, its headquarters is situated in Irvine, California. In-N-Out is celebrated for its commitment to quality, a concise menu, and speedy service, which have contributed to its immense popularity.

However, the rapid expansion of In-N-Out Burger is beginning to stir concerns among neighbors, particularly business owners near some Southern California outlets. They have raised complaints about the extensive lines of cars queuing up for made-to-order double-doubles and animal style fries, which often spill onto the streets and obstruct access to their own establishments.

In-N-Out’s signature practice is not to start cooking its burgers until a customer places an order. To ensure efficient service, the restaurant employs a dedicated team of young workers dressed in red aprons who take orders at the drive-through windows. The chain also relies on a network of mobile kiosks to streamline the drive-through process. However, some of the newer suburban locations are struggling to keep pace with the high demand.

Despite the challenges posed by a slowing economy, In-N-Out has embarked on an ambitious expansion campaign aimed at alleviating pressure on its older outlets. This includes expanding its workforce of red-apron-clad employees and introducing a second operator for each kiosk. Moreover, they’ve introduced a novel computer system that allows customers to pre-order their food, contributing to smoother operations.

In a bid to address this issue, the company has announced plans to open a second In-N-Out restaurant in Woodland Hills at 22822 W. Ventura Blvd. This new location is set to occupy the former site of a bank and a car wash. During peak hours, the drive-through line here often stretches for blocks, impacting the adjacent 23-store Winnetka Square shopping center.
